Food, Mood and Health

We are what we eat. Or so a television programme used to tell us. What we eat affects our physical and mental health so it is important to eat a balanced diet to keep healthy. This should consist of foods from all the major food groups and should not rely too much on processed foods. In today's busy world, a lot of people resort to quick microwave meals or fast food but that is damaging our bodies and our minds.

Food doesn't only affect our physical health. Studies have shown that food can also affect our mood. Low mood has been linked to a deficiency in certain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin, and these can be boosted by certain foods such as avocados, almonds, spirulina and soy rich foods, particularly those made of fermented soy.

Some people believe that meat is bad for health but that isn't necessarily the case. Many people eat varied and healthy diets including meat. Some elderly people cut down on the amount of meat they eat due to losing teeth, but with dental implants it is possible to eat anything.

If you don't eat meat it is essential to make sure you have enough protein and iron in your diet. Lentils, and dark green vegetables are excellent foods if you don't eat much red meat.

There is so much information about healthy diets that it can be confusing, but try different things, monitor how you feel, and do what feels right for you.
